Ubuntu 8.10

Post by tagnostic on Sat Nov 01, 2008 7:06 pm

I recently acquired a copy of SolaisOpen Source for servers,
but it wants to be the root/mbr boss and loader, while I don't
have a problem with that, I do have an issue with it fragging
my hard drive and losing all my tweeks/files in Ubuntu.
I've already started the process of backing everything! up
but I would prefer an alternative, right now I'm using a seperate
hard drive, disconnect one, hookup the other, hey, I like to
be sure of an OS before I commit to it, I'm loving the new
Solaris, but still like the Ubuntu, I may later decide to stick
with one or the other but for now I want both.
So, I'm thinking of installing another copy of Ubuntu and using
it to re partition the hard drive, then trying to install the Solaris
into the newly created partition and just tweeking the grub loader
for Solaris instead of Ubuntu. Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions?
Oh, and for some bloody reason ubuntu won't let me use gparted
to repartition on the fly, no idea whats up with that....

thanks

Isn't there a way you could could partition the hard drive with a section for Ubuntu and another section for Solaris?

thats what I'm trying to do, but the partition editor with Ubuntu (gparted)
doesn't seem to want to work unless I frag the whole mbr, back to
reinstalling the whole thing with all backups and re tweeking, cuz they
never go back exactly when you diddle with partitions and and an OS
especially crap that makes direct memory calls to the hda.
If I can't figure something out by Monday, I'll just bite the bullet
frag it, put on the Solaris and reinstall Ubuntu, then spend Tuesday
putting it all to rights....

Alright I got bored, I installed the opensolaris, i'm just using it for now
seems to be alright, nothing earthshattering, it's definately going to be at least 24hrs of tweeking to get it all up to shape, couple of minor complaints, I probably just havent figured them out yet.. I generally run for workspaces, and I like a different background on each one, so far it's fighting me on that. The system sounds don't seem to want to be enabled, it says they are but they won't even try to test.. Finally on another forum and this one for some bloody reason the font in the reply window here and all the posts on the other one are real sketchy and hard to read.... cant seem to change
it to anything else.. once I get this all tweeked though, i'll probably re-install/dual boot the ubuntu.... seems to be alot more application software support for the ubuntu also, or i need to find some better sites....
will get back on this
once more into the tweeks
